About the Trust
History of the Trust
The Trust was originally the Barkestone Village Hall Fund Building Trust and was set up in the late 1950's and formerly constituted in 1967 by several local families who recognised that the village lacked amenities to bring it together. The village had raised funds which were placed into trust with the intention of buying land or a property to provide a village hall.
The Trust purchased the old village school in 1995 and this was used as the village hall for several years until it was decided by the Trustees that the cost of upkeep and maintenance was too great.
Funds from the sale of the old school were held over until January 2019 when villagers in a public vote polled nearly 4 to 1 in favour of using the money to purchase the Chequers Inn - the former village pub. The existing trustees stepped aside and in June 2019 new trustees finally managed to buy the property, which had lain unused for three years, after undergoing several previous iterations
The existing Trustees stepped aside for new Trustees in 2019. The Trustees now comprise six villagers;
Alec Johns - Chair
Jane Scannell - Treasurer
Sir David Sykes
We are all live in Barkestone le Vale and share the same passion for providing a community facility which brings the village together.
We are keen to expand and extend the number of Trustees, so if you live in the village and are willing to devote some of your time to the management of the Hub then please let us know. We would be delighted to have you on-board with us!
